BIOGRAPHY
Pol Petrino (b. 1996, Italy) is a visual artist working across painting, sculpture, installation, and performance. His practice engages directly with the human condition, understood not as an abstract idea but as a fragile, material state of existence. His work reflects on the cycles of life, death, and transformation, proposing the human being not as separate from nature, but as part of a continuous process of material becoming and dissolution.
In response to the urgencies of the present, Petrino works with raw, locally sourced materials such as earth, stone, and organic matter. His practice is fundamentally process-based and performative: physical gestures such as fracturing stone, imprinting surfaces, and working directly with matter are not preparatory steps, but constitute the work itself.
Central to his research is the concept of imprint as a means of recording absence. Rather than representing the body, Petrino allows it to dissolve into matter, producing works that engage memory as a material condition.
Petrino graduated in Architecture from the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, where he was deeply influenced by his professor, the internationally renowned architect and artist Bijoy Jain. His research has been shaped by extended periods abroad, including over a year working as an artist across Australia and further experience in Indonesia, where direct engagement with diverse cultural and material contexts has played a significant role in shaping his practice.
He recently opened his studio and exhibition space in the historic center of Novara, Italy. Petrino has developed a coherent international practice across Europe and beyond. His work is recognized for the clarity of its vision, the rigor of its methodology, and its sustained engagement with the fundamental conditions of human existence today.
